Nij Hall 17/2026
Part-time students of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) have complained over the incessant noise made by event planners who utilize the school premises on Saturdays.
A cross-section of the students who were interviewed by our correspondent expressed their dissatisfaction with the situation and called on the school management to find a lasting solution to the problem.
For example, a PGD part time student, Temilade during an interview with our correspondence said “first of all, NIJ giving the hall out during class hours, given the fact that part time student have classes on Saturday, it is very unprofessional and unfair because we can not concentrate , we know they want to generate revenue but they can do better, they shouldn’t rent out the hall during class hours they can either move the class forward and rent the all in the evening, because renting the hall during class hours is bad because even lecturers cannot concentrate.”
The views were corroborated by another part time HND student, he said, “the noise that comes with events going on in the school auditorium is annoying, because it allows me lose my train of thoughts and it is unfair to we part time students, we pay more school fees but suffer more. The best thing NIJ can do is either stop renting the hall out on Saturday or provide noise cancellation to students or make the hall noise less.”
While responding to the complaint, a Senior Lecturer in the school, Mr. Akinlolu Ojo, who spoke to our correspondent admitted that the school is aware of the problem and has discussed with its management during meeting but was incapacitated by the fact that the school had to generate revenue to fund itself. In his words “we are also affected by the noise as lecturers when we start teaching and the students cannot hear us. We have discussed this but are constrained by the fact the school is self-funding and we need other ways of generating revenue apart from students’ school fees. If you look at it, the events take place once in a while. There may be months that such wouldn’t happen at all. We just have to be enduring till we find a lasting solution to it”.
