Over 400 editors from across Nigeria are set to converge in Enugu for the Biennial National Convention of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), scheduled to hold from June 26 to 29, 2025, with the theme: “Building a Secure and Cohesive Nigeria: The Role of Dialogue, Inclusion and the Media.”
According to a statement jointly signed by the NGE President, Mr. Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the event will feature prominent figures in the media and security sectors, including media doyens Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu (Vanguard), Chief Segun Osoba, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, Prince Nduka Obaigbena (THISDAY/Arise News), and Dr. John Momoh (Channels TV).
Dr. Momoh will serve as chairman of the convention, while Amuka-Pemu, Osoba, and Ugochukwu have been designated as Fathers of the Day. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris Malagi, will officially declare the event open.
The Executive Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, will serve as Chief Host of the convention, underscoring the state’s strategic support for press freedom and national dialogue.
In a major highlight, the Director-General of the State Security Services (SSS), Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, is billed to deliver the keynote address titled: “Nation’s Security Future: Harnessing Diversity for Peace/Stability and the Media’s Role.” The National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, will also grace the occasion as Special Guest of Honour.
The Guild said this year’s theme is designed to address Nigeria’s persistent security challenges by exploring the unifying power of diversity and the responsibility of the media in promoting inclusive governance and social cohesion.
“The media can achieve this by highlighting diverse perspectives and experiences, combating hate speech, misinformation, and stereotypes, and fostering dialogue and understanding among different groups,” the statement read.
The NGE emphasized that diversity, when properly harnessed, is a powerful tool for creativity, innovation, and national progress. It also called for inclusive leadership that gives every segment of the Nigerian population a voice in governance.
The convention will also feature elections for new national executives who will steer the Guild’s affairs over the next two years, amid growing calls for greater press responsibility and editorial integrity.
As security issues, national unity, and media ethics dominate public discourse, this year’s NGE convention is expected to provide a critical platform for reflection, dialogue, and strategic action.
