Students Turn to Video Games for Stress Relief Ahead of Exams

As the first-semester examinations at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) begin on Monday, March 10, students are seeking ways to manage stress and maintain focus using video games.

While some turn to traditional relaxation methods like reading books outside school work or listening to music, a growing number are finding solace in playing football video games.

With exams scheduled to begin on March 10, anxiety is running high among students striving for academic excellence.

Many are dedicating long hours to revision, attending extra classes, and forming study groups. However, amidst the pressure, some have carved out time to unwind through gaming.

Nijinsight gathered on Thursday, March 6, that football video games, particularly EA FC and eFootball, have become the preferred choice for students looking to relax.

Unlike other forms of entertainment, these games offer a mix of competition, skill, and social interaction—key factors that make them appealing.

A study on Revista Comunicar showed that video game usage among young people has varying effects on their health, socialization and academic performance depending on usage.

An ND2 Student, David Ajayi, said, “I play FIFA with my friends during breaks between classes. It’s a great way to relax and take our minds off our studies, even if it’s just for a short while.”

Beyond just entertainment, video games have been shown to offer cognitive benefits. Studies suggest that gaming can improve problem-solving skills, enhance reaction time, and boost multitasking abilities. This perspective challenges the long-held notion that gaming is merely a distraction.

For many students, gaming serves as a brief escape from the stress of academic life.

On his part, the Student Representative Council (SRC) Sports Director, Famoroti Tunde Honourable has emphasised the positive aspects of video gaming.

He said, “Video games can be a healthy way to manage stress and improve mental well-being. As long as it’s done in moderation, playing video games can be a fun and engaging way to relax.”

As exam season intensifies, NIJ students will likely continue turning to football video games as a way to balance academic demands with relaxation.
