Students and lecturers of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) have commended the institution’s security architecture, describing it as professional, responsive, and critical to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment.
Speaking on the issue, students highlighted the professionalism of NIJ’s security operatives, particularly during vehicle checks and entry procedures into the campus. From the orderly screening of cars to polite but thorough questioning and requests for identification at the gate, students say the process is firm yet respectful.

According to Sijibomi Akintewe, a student of Post graduate program at NIJ, “Since the change in security personnel late last year, there has been a clear improvement in professionalism at NIJ. The current team relates better with students, staff, and visitors, and handles security matters with confidence and respect. It’s evident that they understand their role and are doing it well.”
Lecturers also echoed similar sentiments, emphasising that effective security goes beyond physical presence to professionalism and preparedness. A senior lecturer at the institute, said the school’s security framework reflects deliberate planning and institutional responsibility. “Security at NIJ is proactive, not reactive. The personnel are trained, respectful, and understand the importance of protecting both people and property within an academic environment,” the lecturer noted.
Observers say NIJ’s approach aligns with best practices for tertiary institutions, where safety is increasingly seen as a foundation for academic excellence. By prioritising security professionalism, the institute continues to reinforce trust among students, staff, and parents, positioning itself as a model for campus safety within Nigeria’s higher education sector.
