“In furtherance to the seven days of National mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 15 July, 2025, as a Public Holiday in honour of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.”

Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated that; the holiday is a mark of respect for the ex president’s dedication to national service, his contributions to democracy, and his lasting impact on governance and development, urging Nigerians to use the day to reflect on Buhari’s legacy and uphold the values he stood for—unity, peace, and patriotism.

However, as part of the mourning period, national flags are to fly at half-mast for seven days, which has begun on, Sunday, July 13.

Meanwhile, the Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, has announced that Buhari will be paid to rest, on Tuesday, July 15, at 2 p.m., in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.

Governor Radda made this known while addressing journalists, at the Government House today, shortly after his return from London.

He explained that, the burial arrangement is concluded in consultation with the late president’s family.

Buhari, who served as both military and civilian leader, was a major figure in Nigeria’s political history. After three failed attempts, he won the 2015 presidential election under the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeating then-President Goodluck Jonathan. He was re-elected in 2019.

His administration introduced economic programmes such as the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme and the closure of land borders to boost local production. However, it also grappled with economic difficulties, including multiple recessions, rising inflation, and unemployment.

Moreover, Buhari’s frequent medical travels to the UK during his presidency drew widespread public attention and debate about government transparency.

Before his civilian presidency, Buhari ruled as military Head of State from December 31, 1983, to August 27, 1985, following a military coup. As a Major General, he launched the War Against Indiscipline to promote order and moral conduct. In 1994, he was appointed Executive Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund under the Abacha administration.

The announcement of his passing has triggered nationwide tributes from political leaders and institutions. President Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, governors, lawmakers, and many other Nigerians have expressed deep sorrow over his death.

The Federal Government also extends its condolences to the late president’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
