The Champions FC’s (HND 2) dream is dashed, as Knights FC (Part-Time) wins the Provost Cup Final 1-0, at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), a result leaving fans stunned and players emotional.
The Sports Day edition of Students’ Week 2025, themed “The Wave’25,” reached its climax in an electrifying match between Champions FC and Knights FC on 9th July. Despite battling against the odds to reach the final, Champions FC hoped to capitalize on their momentum against Knights FC, who were seeking to extend their dominance with a third consecutive win.
The final whistle marks a heartbreaking moment for the finalists, who had been eagerly anticipating a triumphant send-off ahead of graduation. As the reality of their defeat set in, several players were overcome with emotion, shedding tears on the field. Despite their loss, the team garnered admiration from the crowd for their unwavering determination and exemplary sportsmanship.
A Champions FC player reflected on the defeat, his emotions evident: ‘This loss hurts, but we’re proud of the journey we’ve taken. We left everything on the field.’
The Knights FC players erupts in jubilation, hoisting the Provost Cup aloft as their classmates cheers them on. This victory marks their third consecutive win, cementing their legacy and earning them immense respect as a dominant force in the tournament’s history, a record that may stand the test of time.
Earlier in the day, the campus was buzzing with multiple sports and games, including, table tennis showdowns; featuring students and lecturers. Snooker, and various racing competitions like sack race, egg race, and relay. A heated FIFA PS4 tournament also drew gaming fans, while indoor games like Ludo, Chess, Ayo, Whot, and Checkers kept the atmosphere lively.
“Today was more than just sports it was about bonding, emotions, and memories,” said a student organizer. “Even the tears are part of what makes this day unforgettable.”
With snacks in hand, cheers in the air, and moments of both joy and heartbreak, Sports Day 2025 at NIJ was a true festival of passion, youth, and spirit.
