The Lagos State Government has issued a high-level alert to residents, warning of impending flash floods due to heavy rainfall expected in the coming days.

This warning comes on the heels of Saturdays’s torrential rains that caused flooding in some parts of the state.

According to the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the state’s weather stations have predicted thunderstorms and widespread convective rainfall with dense cloud cover, indicating very heavy rainfalls and flash floods.

“We urge residents, especially those living in low-lying areas and communities near rivers and lagoons, to be on high alert and take necessary precautions,” Wahab said. “All areas abutting the rivers and lagoons in Lagos are also at risk of experiencing flash floods with high currents.”

The government advised residents without pressing outdoor engagements to stay indoors during the rains and for parents to watch over their children, especially those on mid-term break, to prevent them from playing in the rain or swimming in floodwaters.

The state government has also assured residents that all drains are being cleaned and maintained year-round to contain runoff from rainfalls. However, the government emphasized the need for concerted efforts to mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall.

They residents warned against disposing refuse into drains during rainfall to prevent blockages and flash floods.
