Identifying the eco angle in reporting is no longer optional but very essential for creating meaningful and complete stories that inform and inspire public action.
This was stated at virtual eco journalism workshop organised by EcoZone aimed to equip emerging reporters with the skills to identify environmental narratives in everyday news stories.
Themed “Identifying the Eco Angle in Stories,” the one-hour WhatsApp session emphasised how journalists can craft impactful stories that connect with environmental issues.
Lecturer Mr. Anthony Oligbo, EcoZone President Mr. Emmanuel, and other executive members of the club pioneered the initiative.
“Eco-journalism helps shape behaviour and influence policy by making people see how the environment connects with their everyday lives,” the facilitators explained.
Among the HND1 students present was Kamal Rahman and others, who expressed appreciation for the session, describing it as “an eye-opener” that reinforced their interest in solution-focused storytelling.
Participants learned how to frame stories using data, explore public policies, highlight community impacts, and avoid sensationalism or alarmism. The session also underscored the importance of localising global issues like climate change to make stories more relatable and urgent.
The event, organised by @ecozoneclub, ended with an interactive Q&A session, leaving many participants inspired and better equipped to tell stories that matter both to people and the planet.
