Environmental Studies students at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) have marked the World Environment Day on Thursday, June 5 with a series of impressive presentations reflecting both creativity and commitment to environmental awareness.
Grouped into teams, the students addressed various environmental themes, presenting their ideas with high levels of innovation and depth. Their efforts were part of an academic exercise designed to engage them in practical advocacy and communication on pressing environmental issues.
The supervising lecturer, Mr. Anthony Oligbo, commended all the groups for what he described as a “job well done.” He praised their creativity and approach to tackling environmental challenges, noting that the quality of work presented showed a deep understanding of the subject.

He however pointed out a few technical shortcomings in some of the presentations and provided professional corrections, urging the students to learn from the feedback and continue improving.
The session ended on a high note with students feeling encouraged and motivated to contribute meaningfully to environmental advocacy, both within and beyond the classroom.
World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5 to raise awareness and inspire action for the protection of the environment.
ECOZONE – environmental sustainability club on the campus recently held its first meeting in the second semester.
The goal of the club according to the founding lecturer, Oligbo is to raise environmental advocates and change agents amongst the students and the general public.

The high point of the meeting attended by some new members included the following according to a LinkedIn post by Oligbo:
Biodiversity and Conservation: Understanding the value of preserving Ecosystems and species.
There, I highlighted the importance of conserving the Biodiversity, which includes:
1. Provision of clean air, water, good soil formation and climate regulation.
2. It supports agriculture, fisheries and forestry thereby ensuring food security and livelihoods.
3. It provides tourist attraction, employment and income.
4. It has some cultural and spiritual relevance as well as having aesthetics and recreational benefits.
A real life question was asked on what are the things to note when pitching for a livestock butchering business. The response geared towards the key words: sustainability and being Eco-friendly in approach to business.
Never write a business plan or an end of year report without having the environmental dimension included in it.
