The Students’ Week at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) has evolved into one of the most anticipated events in the academic calendar. Since its inception in 2013, the week has been marked by a series of vibrant, engaging, and memorable activities designed to entertain, inspire, and foster camaraderie among students. From beauty pageants to career talks, and sports competitions to cultural nights, the Students’ Week remains an unforgettable experience for all involved.
A Tradition of Glitz and Glamour
Typically held during the second semester, after the conclusion of first-semester exams and the subsequent break, Students’ Week at NIJ has become synonymous with excitement. Students eagerly anticipate the various activities that fill the week, ranging from the prestigious Mr. & Mrs. NIJ beauty pageant to the glamorous Dinner and Award Night, where top achievers are recognized across different fields.
2013: The First of Many Unforgettable Weeks
The 2013 Students’ Week set the tone for future editions, featuring a series of events that were both exciting and impactful. The week kicked off with a grand beauty pageant, followed by a dinner and awards ceremony. A career talk, featuring professionals from various industries, provided valuable insights into the importance of career specialization, encouraging students to take their chosen fields seriously.
Key highlights from the 2013 Students’ Week included:
- Treasure Hunt: The treasure hunt started on Monday, with teams vying for the top spot. Though many teams were eliminated in the first round, a handful of individuals persevered to the final round. The day ended with an uplifting praise and worship night at the University Chapel.
- Endurance Trek: Led by the Chief Security Officer, Mr. O. Daramola, the trek involved both students and staff, culminating at the residence of the late former Governor of Lagos State, Chief Michael Otedola. There, Lady Doja Otedola shared words of encouragement with the students, urging them to study hard and uphold good behavior. Miss Chidera Nwakwo, an HND 2 student, presented a token of appreciation to Lady Otedola.
- Sports Competitions: The competition between the Faculties of Science and Humanities & Social Sciences proved to be a highlight, with intense football and basketball matches, both of which ended in draws.
- Career Talk: Mr. Edikan Ekong of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) offered an enlightening discussion on the Nigerian stock market, distinguishing between the money market and the capital market. He encouraged students interested in stockbroking to pursue a diploma in the field, noting various career opportunities in stockbroking firms and even self-employment.
- Bonfire Night: Hosted by students Iwu Agnes and Nzote Patrick, the bonfire night was a memorable occasion. With the presence of prominent staff, including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Steve Afolami, the evening featured performances by students Naroblaze (Rufai) Damian and Ohis, as well as refreshments and lively discussions.
- Dinner and Awards Night: The event was the crowning jewel of the week, with students dressed to impress for a night of recognition and celebration. The awards acknowledged academic, social, and sporting achievements from the past year. Some of the award categories included:
- Comic Act (Female): Bello Racheal, HND 1
- Most Fashionable (Male): Nwabiankea Peter, HND 2
- Sportswoman of the Year: Nwankwo Chinedu, HND 2
- Student of the Year: Onyia Emmanuel, HND 1
The event concluded with a Thanksgiving Mass, offering a moment of reflection and gratitude for the successful week.

Since 2013, Students’ Week at NIJ has only grown in scope and impact, with each year introducing new activities while maintaining the core values of fostering relationships, talent discovery, and academic growth. From sports to intellectual talks, entertainment to networking, the week serves as a celebration of student life and an opportunity for personal and academic development.
Looking ahead to the second semester of 2025, anticipation is already building for the next iteration of Students’ Week. As NIJ students continue to innovate and excel, we can only expect the event to further strengthen the bonds among students and create more unforgettable memories.
