An insider’s account of how alcohol consumption impacts students’ performance

The Christmas season, celebrated warmly and invitingly across the world, often evokes images of snow-covered rooftops, twinkling lights, and the melodic sound of carols echoing through the crisp winter air. In Nigeria, where Christmas comes with its own unique charm and warmth, the celebrations are equally enchanting yet distinct. One particularly vibrant celebration takes place at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) in Ogba, Lagos, where students and faculty unite to honour the spirit of the season through an annual Christmas carol celebration. This essay will delve into the joyous experiences that define this remarkable event, offering a snapshot of the talents, camaraderie, and festive spirit emblematic of NIJ’s community.

The Anticipation of Festivity

As the holiday approaches, the atmosphere on the NIJ campus is shrouded in a palpable excitement.

The weeks leading up to the event are filled with preparation—auditions are held, songs are selected, and costumes are designed. This is more than just a performance; it is a tradition that students look forward to each year, serving as a critical outlet for creativity and communal bonding.

In the words of NIJ student Amaechi Obinna: “The Christmas carol celebration is the highlight of our year. It reminds us of our shared values as a community and allows us to express ourselves in ways that are often discouraged in the rigours of study” (Obinna, 2024). This longing for connection and expression is what makes the carol celebration at NIJ not just an event, but a cherished ritual.

Creative Preparations Come to Life

As preparations ramp up, students immerse themselves in creative expression—drawing from both contemporary and traditional influences.

The atmosphere is electric, filled with the sounds of laughter, music, and occasional notes of nervousness as final touches bring the celebration to life.

Costumes—immaculately crafted by hand—reflect the theme of the year, often combining elements of African tradition with Western holiday motifs. The students take great pride in their outfits; there is a sense of ownership and responsibility that comes with representing their institute. “Every year, we aim to do something new with our costumes. It’s a way to make the celebration unique and to represent our culture”, explains student designer Chidinma Okafor (Okafor, 2024). This blend of cultures not only fosters creativity, but also enriches the student’s experience, allowing them to learn and grow in an integrative educational environment.

The Night of Celebration

On the evening of the event, as darkness descends upon Ogba, the campus transforms.

The air is filled with the aroma of traditional holiday foods from food stalls set up to cater to the attendees, further inviting everyone into the spirit of the occasion.

Parents, alumni, and members of the local community gather alongside students and faculty, eager to witness the talents of NIJ’s student body. The event begins with a heartwarming welcome from the Institute’s director, followed by a brief prayer that invokes a spirit of joy and thanksgiving. The audience sits in rapt attention, with children excitedly whispering the names of their favourite carols.

The performances that follow are nothing short of spectacular.

Each performance aims to evoke the essence of the season, ranging from popular carols to original compositions written by students. A standout is a rendition of “Silent Night,” beautifully harmonised by a group of vocalists, which leaves many in the audience teary-eyed at its emotional depth.

In addition to the music, skits based on themes of goodwill and charity are performed, further reminding everyone of the true meaning of Christmas. These presentations invoke both laughter and reflection, highlighting the gift of giving and the importance of community. As the night progresses, the sense of unity amongst those present is palpable; for a moment, the pressures of academic life are forgotten as joy prevails.

Capturing the Essence

Photographs and videos taken throughout the celebration serve as a crucial element in encapsulating the energy and emotions of the night.

These visual documents are not only for sharing on social media but are collected into an archive to celebrate the legacy of camaraderie at NIJ.

The role of technology in this tradition cannot be understated. Students utilise platforms like Instagram and Twitter to showcase snippets of their performances, which often reach a wider audience beyond the walls of the Institute. “Using social media helps us to connect with our friends and family, even those who are far away from home during the festive season”, notes media student, Ibrahim Desmond (Desmond, 2024). This engagement helps to cultivate an inclusive atmosphere, encouraging the participation of even those who cannot attend in person.

Community Outreach and Giving Back

In true Christmas spirit, the NIJ Christmas carol celebration extends beyond entertainment and fellowship;

it also embodies a commitment to community service. In the weeks leading up to the event, students collaborate to collect food items and clothing donations, which are given to local orphanages and shelters.

This aspect of outreach highlights the students’ awareness of their social responsibilities and reinforces the notion that Christmas is a season of giving.

“I feel like the charitable aspect of our celebration is the most important part,” states Chuka Emmanuel, one of the student organisers. “It means more to give back to those in need, especially during this time when some people struggle” (Emmanuel, 2023). The collaborative efforts to donate foster a sense of togetherness and provide a sense of purpose beyond the festivities themselves.

Reflection and Conclusion

As the celebration winds down, students and faculty alike reflect on the experiences shared throughout the evening. The carol celebration not only brings joy but also strengthens the bonds of friendship and community within the NIJ family. The stories, music, and shared laughter create lasting memories, illustrating the importance of unity during the festive season.

This celebration serves as a poignant reminder of the true spirit of Christmas—one that transcends cultural barriers and emphasizes compassion, generosity, and the beauty of coming together. In a world increasingly consumed by technology and fast-paced living, the NIJ Christmas carol celebration stands as a beacon of community spirit, joyfully echoing the heartfelt sounds of the season.
