Ogba, Lagos – 2025 – As the first academic session of 2025 draws to a close, the National Institute of Journalism (NIJ) is gearing up for the upcoming examination period. With exams set to commence on March 10, 2025, the institution has implemented several key measures to ensure a seamless and successful exam experience for its students.
In a conversation with Mr. Femi Osuntoki, a seasoned broadcast lecturer at NIJ, he highlighted the distinction between exams and true knowledge. “Examinations are not a true test of knowledge, but since they are a requirement, they are part of the journey toward earning a certificate,” he said. Mr. Osuntoki urged students to take their studies seriously, cultivate genuine interest, share ideas, and connect their current coursework with previous learnings. He emphasized the importance of engaging in group brainstorming sessions to enhance the overall learning environment and encouraged students to make optimal use of their time. He also recommended focusing on study materials, particularly past questions, which are available to assist in exam preparation.
For Wunmi, a final-year HND 2 student, the exam experience at NIJ has become more familiar, easing the anxiety she once felt. However, this time, a new challenge presents itself: exams have been scheduled for 9:00 AM, replacing the usual afternoon slot. This shift required an adjustment to her study routine, prompting her to revise earlier and more effectively. Despite the challenges of balancing other responsibilities, Wunmi remains determined to excel in her final exams, aiming for top grades to boost her CGPA before graduation.
Oreoluwa Glory, an HND 1 student, shared a different perspective on exam preparations. Though she admits to feeling exhausted, she is resolute in her commitment to her studies. “Before jumping into the river, you should know what it takes,” she reflects. Oreoluwa revealed that while the pressure of exams once caused her significant anxiety—especially during research-based assessments—she now feels more confident as an HND student. She advocates for proper preparation and faith in the process, encouraging her junior colleagues, “If you do the right thing, there’s no need to worry about the outcome.”
For Boluwatife, an ND 2 finalist, preparation is a long-term commitment. Unlike many students who cram in the final days before exams, she began preparing at the start of the semester. Preferring the quiet of midnight study sessions, Boluwatife is confident and unshaken by the typical exam pressure. She is determined to improve her CGPA, aiming for a significant boost from her current 3.2. With unwavering optimism, she believes that with dedication, a perfect 5.0 is within reach. “If I can do 3.2, I can do 5.0,” she affirms, setting her sights on finishing her academic journey on a high note.
Emmanuel, an ND 1 student, expressed his aspirations and strategies for the exams. “Every fresher’s goal is to achieve a good CGPA,” he stated. Emmanuel is focused on performing well in the upcoming exams to progress to the next stage of his studies. He also discussed the balance between his academic preparations and other responsibilities, mentioning that listening to music and allowing himself moments of relaxation helps him stay mentally healthy. “My simple technique is I just try to listen to music and most times just be myself,” he shared.
To ensure an optimal environment for all students, the institution has bolstered security measures, reinforced examination protocols, and equipped examination halls with necessary resources. Students are reminded of the importance of adhering to academic integrity and examination rules.
Dr. Adeboye Ola, Deputy Provost at NIJ, expressed confidence in the students’ ability to succeed, saying, “We are confident that our students will perform exceptionally well. The Examination Board has worked tirelessly to ensure that they have all the resources needed to succeed.”
As the countdown to exams continues, students are encouraged to remain focused, disciplined, and confident in their preparations. The institution wishes all candidates the best of luck in their upcoming exams.
