The PGD students of the Nigeria Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba, made history as they triumphed in the Provost Cup football competition. With a mix of seasoned players and those returning to the game after a long time, the team showed resilience, teamwork, and an undeniable hunger for victory. This was more than just a football match, it was a battle of passion, endurance, and the power of teamwork. Against all odds, the PGD squad overcame challenges to deliver a spectacular performance, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats.
The importance of the match wasn’t just about winning, it was about building connections, reigniting a love for the game, and proving that unity and determination can conquer anything. For some players, this was a regular test of their skills; for others, it was an opportunity to relive their football days after a long time away from the sport. Regardless of their backgrounds, they all came together, fought hard, and delivered a breathtaking performance that will be remembered for a long time!

Victory didn’t come easy, but the PGD team had a game plan and stuck to it, solid defence, quick counterattacks, and deadly finishing. Led by Captain Shobo Boluwatife, they played with intensity, fighting for every ball, pushing through exhaustion, and making every opportunity count. Boluwatife led from the front, securing a hat-trick, while Jimsah-Taylor and Christian Chukwu also found the net in the course of the competition. Though some players struggled at the start, especially those who hadn’t played in a while they adjusted well, found their rhythm, and played like they had never left the game.
MEET THE TEAM
Akinkunmi Bello (Coach) – Coaching the team wasn’t an easy one. With players from different backgrounds, some experienced, some rusty. Bello had a big challenge on his hands. My communication skills and ability to maximize the differences between the players were the game changers. I understood the team’s strengths and weaknesses and made every player feel important, ensuring they played as a united front.
Salisu Kehinde (Assistant Coach) – Played a vital role in the team’s strategy, working closely with the head coach to motivate the squad. This was an opportunity for him to put his management skills to use.
Shobo Boluwatife (Captain, Forward) – The leader of the squad and a regular on the pitch, Boluwatife is a natural goal poacher. His three goals in the competition were a crucial one which sealed the win for the team, proving once again why he is the captain.
Justice Winner (Right Winger) – A fast, creative player who plays football often, Justice terrorized defenders with his dribbles and delivered two crucial assists in the course of the competition.
Jimoh Ibrahim fondly called Jimsah Taylor (Left Winger) – One of the team’s most consistent players, Taylor was a nightmare for the opposition’s defence, scoring a well-deserved goal. He is also the governor for the PGD class, he has shown us the beauty of having strength in different areas.
Christian Chukwu (Midfielder) – Though he didn’t play as often, Christian stepped up when it mattered most, displaying excellent ball control and scoring a crucial goal. He was a super sub.
Ajayi Peter (Defensive Midfielder) – A hard-hitting, no-nonsense player, Peter broke up attacks and ensured that the opposition had no easy way through. He played like his life depended on the match.
Murtala Fuad (Forward) – It had been a while since Fuad last played, and it showed at first, but with time, his body adjusted, and he became a real threat up front.
Sola (Midfielder) – One of the players who hadn’t played in a long time, Sola struggled at first but found his rhythm, linking the attack and defense well.
Ayanfe (Right Back) – A tenacious defender, Ayanfe stood firm against the opposition’s wingers, shutting down attacks and winning key duels.
Richard (Left Back) – A reliable left-back who ensured defensive stability, keeping the backline organized and making crucial tackles.
Tobi (Goal Keeper) – An amazing stopper who isn’t scared to always throw himself on the floor to make sure the ball doesn’t go past the line to get into the net. He had some amazing saves and won the man of the match in one of the match played.
Some of the players’ expectations were met, as regular players like Boluwatife, Taylor, and Justice were able to test their abilities and compete at a high level. For those returning to football after a long break, it was an opportunity to rekindle their love for the game and prove they still had what it takes. Above all, for the entire team, it was about having fun, building bonds, and showing that the PGD students were a force to be reckoned with!
The players loved the energy and competitiveness of the match, the team spirit and unity they shared on the pitch, and the excitement of playing in an official competition. However, they recognized areas for improvement, such as having more training sessions to help those who hadn’t played in a while regain their form faster, enhancing team coordination before the next competition, and improving passing accuracy and overall fitness levels to ensure a stronger performance in future games.
With this historic victory, the PGD team has set a high standard for future competitions. Their blend of experienced and returning players proved that dedication, teamwork, and a hunger to win are more important than just skill alone.
This win is just the beginning. Next time, they’ll be back, stronger and better prepared!
