Professor Jide Peter Jimoh who was recently nonimated and elected as the new Dean of the Faculty of Media and Communication Studies, Lagos State University (LASU).
He is a distinguished Professor of Journalism and Media Studies, specialising in communication and development, with a strong focus on conflict-sensitive journalism.
He is an alumnus of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where he bagged his first degree in Mass Communication. His professional journey began in journalism, where he spent over a decade working with prominent Nigerian media houses where he started as a pioneer staff of TSM.
He worked also with The Mail and later Sunday Times before moving briefly to the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) in 2000. It was from NIJ he joined LASU as a pioneer staff of the communication programme in 2001. Through investigative reporting, editorial work, and opinion pieces, he established himself as a respected voice in the Nigerian media landscape.
Even after transitioning to academia, Professor Jimoh remained an active contributor to media discourse. From 2020 to 2023, he served as a Visiting Member of the Editorial Board of The Guardian Newspapers, where he provided critical insights into national and international issues. He continues to shape public discourse through OP-ED interventions, bridging the gap between journalism practice and scholarly inquiry.
ACADEMIC JOURNEY, RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS AND AWARDS
Professor Jimoh pursued his passion for media scholarship by obtaining a Ph.D. in Peace and Conflict Studies, with a specialization in Media and Conflict, from the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ibadan (UI).
His research explores the intersection of journalism, conflict resolution, and media ethics, contributing to a deeper understanding of the role of the press in peacebuilding and democratic governance making him to Berg NYSC State Award (Abuja, 1988), Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa Fellowship of SSRC, Brooklyn (2012-2013), Exchange Scholar to Birmingham City University through the Erasmus Mundo Programme (2018). Furthermore, He became the Best Graduating Student, St Augustine’s College, Kabba (1982).
As a committed scholar, he has published about 50 research papers, covering mass communication, media studies, and conflict-sensitive journalism. His work has influenced both academic thought and practical media approaches in Nigeria and beyond.
In 2013, recognising the need to advance media education, Professor Jimoh, alongside esteemed colleagues, established the Ph.D. program in the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at LASU. This initiative has since played a crucial role in mentoring and developing younger lecturers, strengthening the faculty’s academic and research capacity.
LEADERSHIP AND RECENT APPOINTMENT AS DEAN
In addition to his academic contributions, Professor Jimoh has held key leadership positions. He was on sabbatical at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, where he continued to shape journalism education and mentor the next generation of media scholars.
On Monday, February 24, 2025, he was elected unopposed as the Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at LASU. The election, held at the Digital Media and Research Centre, Ojo Campus, was ratified by the Faculty’s Board of Studies, with Mrs. Titilola N. Ogunshote serving as the Returning Officer.
In his acceptance speech, Professor Jimoh pledged to:
- Uphold the values, standards, and academic integrity of the faculty.
- Promote the welfare of faculty members and students.
- Encourage innovation and technology in media education.
- Strengthen research and scholarly contributions in communication and journalism.
He is set to assumed office on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, succeeding Professor Sunday Olayinka Alawode, whose tenure concluded on Monday, March 3.
