The basketball team of the Post Graduate Students of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) has advanced to the final of the ongoing tournament put in place as part of the activities to celebrate the students’ week.

The PGD team achieved the feat after they provided the much needed basketball expertise and court dominance to defeat National Diploma (ND) 2 and Higher National Diploma (HND) 1 students in the quarter-finals and semi finals, respectively.

Both matches were played on Monday, 24th of June 2024.

The PGD team won 5-4 against ND 2 and secured a decisive 11-1 victory against HND 1.

Speaking after the games, Abel Sunday, the captain of the PGD team, thanked God for the ability to succeed.

Abel also told our correspondent, Patricia Gabriels, that the team succeeded because they were underrated by their opponents.

Speaking particularly about the match against ND 2, Abel said: “The ND 2 students felt they could beat the PGD students because they were younger and so they played loosely. Now they have realized their mistakes but it is too late.”

Meanwhile, the ND 2 students weren’t glad about losing the game.

The captain of the ND 2 team who spoke with our reporter gave an assurance that they will come prepared for the next game.

The final game will be played on Wednesday, June 26th, in the basketball court on the school premises.
